The Space

Germaine Greer’s first book, The Female Eunuch (1969), took the world by storm and remains one of the most widely read texts of the feminist movement. She has since had a distinguished academic career in Britain and the USA. She makes regular appearances in print and other media as a broadcaster, journalist, columnist and reviewer. Since 1988 she has been Director (and financier) of Stump Cross Books, a publishing house specialising in lesser-known works by early women writers.

Greer was photographed by Diane Arbus in 1971. She has written of resisting the trap of her lens. In this lecture she will discuss how she herself was “framed” as a starting point to an exploration of how marginalised groups are themselves “framed”, or defined, by arts institutions.

Nottingham Contemporary's programme of talks and discussions is jointly supported by The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University.
